Removing Rug Divots

With home staging, we often ask the homeowner to move or remove furniture -- and then we see the dreaded “rug divot” where the furniture has crushed the rug fibres. Fear not! Here are 3 easy fixes
to have those fibres standing at attention again.
The Cold Approach (my favourite)
-
Place a large ice cube in the middle of the dent (divot).
-
Wait 4-5 hours.
-
Blot with a clean cloth and then use a spoon to pick up the fibres.
The Hot Approach
-
Fill a spray bottle with distilled water.
-
Spray the water into the carpet dent to moisten.
-
Hold a hair dryer 10 - 15 cm (4-6 inches) above the carpet dent.
-
On the high setting blow on the moistened divot until the water is warm.
-
Then use a spoon to pick up the fibres.
The Steamy Approach
-
Fill a steam iron with distilled water and turn on high.
-
Hold the iron 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) above the carpet. Do not touch the iron to your carpet.
-
Apply a stream of steam to the dent (divot) multiple times.
-
Once the area is moist, then use a spoon to pick up the fibres.
These fixes are for natural and synthetic carpets. For silk carpets, a professional service would be your best bet.
So go ahead and move your furniture.
